Q: Can BeneFIX be used for prophylactic treatment?

A: Clinical studies have evaluated the prophylactic use of plasma-derived factor IX (pdFIX) concentrates for the prevention of hemorrhagic episodes, hemarthrosis and the development of arthropathy. On the basis of these studies, the National Hemophilia Foundation’s Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MASAC) recommended that in the USA primary prophylaxis be considered optimal therapy for persons with severe hemophila (FIX levels < 1% ), beginning at an early age (1-2 years). Prophylactic regimens for the treatment of hemophilia B are aimed at maintaining a trough level of FIX activity > 1% of normal. With plasma derived FIX concentrates, this has been accomplished with 25 – 40 IU/kg twice weekly. Individual patient pharmacokinetic data has been evaluated as an aid in determining optimal dosing of FIX concentrates in the prophylactic treatment of hemophilia B, both from a medical and economic point of view. A clinical study which evaluated secondary prophylaxis for the treatment of arthropathy concluded that treatment did not reverse joint disease but may alter the clinical course of hemophilia. The continuous infusion administration of factor including via implantable pump systems are being evaluated in future prophylactic regimens

Our Earth is self-contained unit. It provides all the natural resources we need to support life: air, water, food, fuels, and minerals. It is also equipped with ways to break down and recycle wastes naturally.
Natural resources fall into two categories: renewable (plants and animals) and non-renewable (minerals and fossil fuels). In nature, resources and wastes are cycled through the environment in never-ending patterns. There is virtually no waste in nature. Resources recycle themselves in this efficient ecosystem.
People are also members of the global ecosystem. We depend on our environment to provide for us and then absorb our waste. However, the ways in which humans use resources and produce wastes are different from those in natural systems. We use technology to extract resources, process chemicals and manufacture goods, all of which use energy and produce wastes.
Rather than using a cyclical approach, we have historically used a linear approach in dealing with resources. In other words, instead of working with the 3Rs – REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE – we seem to follow the 3Ds – DEVELOP, DEVOUR, DISPOSE. That is why it is so important to understand that GARBAGE IS RESOURCEFUL! Nature cannot afford to discard usable materials, and neither can we.
The concept of sustainability is an important one worldwide. How we consume our resources here in BC affects people all over the world. We all have to slow our rate of consumption of natural resources, and change the way we remove them from the ground, so that enough resources will be available for future generations.
